How to manage your time effectively
(while balancing work and play)
Yo, Yo!
It’s been a crazy few weeks and it’s just getting started—retreats, meet ups, vacations, and conferences.
Plus, a lot of work on my businesses.
Today’s topics revolve around a few key thoughts I’ve had about managing my time and energy.
But first, a quick announcement:
We are launching the ATX House Hack Starter Pack!
It’s a free educational email course to help people buy their first house hack in Austin, TX.
House hacking changed my life.
At age 23, I bought my first house hack.
By 27, I had 10 properties and was financially free.
By 29, I became a millionaire (and a multi-millionaire by 30)
And this year, I bought my dream home in Puerto Rico using the equity from my very first house hack.
While it’s specific to the Austin market, it will help you too if you are looking to buy your first house hack where you live.
If you want to get access to this course—reply back to this email saying, “Send me the course” and we’ll get you on the list.
Ok, now back to managing my time and energy.
Someone recently asked me how I organize my day:
I time-block for my different companies.
The time gets blocked in my calendar so I can focus solely on each company in the given time frame. No distractions. No task switching.
I also write the top 3 things I want to accomplish that day and delegate the rest.
Of course, I do more than just 3 things each day. But these are the three most important tasks to be as productive as possible.
If I can’t delegate them, I push them off to the next day.
The key takeaways for you are:
Time block: This is a dedicated time to focus on one project, company, or task. You can’t hold two thoughts at the same time. And task switching kills productivity.
Top 3 goals: There’s a lot of research that having more than 3 goals loses productivity because you aren’t focused on the most important drivers. When you have a bunch of goals for the day, it becomes these long to-do lists, that aren’t productive because there are only a few key tasks are the biggest needle movers.
Delegation: My time and energy are limited. To maximize the return on my time and energy, I have to focus on the most important tasks. If it’s not as important, or it’s outside of my skillset, I delegate it to someone. This lets me accomplish more in the day by focusing in the right places and having someone else do other work for me.
Recently I was in Bar Harbor Maine
We went hiking, saw the beautiful scenery, and even took a cold plunge into the freezing ocean. It was an incredible experience that got me thinking about the importance of recovery.
We are all charging hard towards financial independence, grinding in our business, and hunting for the next deal.
But we have to pull away every once in a while to recharge, relax, and enjoy life. Remember the famous proverb: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
I recommend putting time on your calendar to enjoy life.
It gives you something to work towards, even if it’s months in advance. When you know your next break is coming, you can focus on your work now, so you can enjoy your free time later.
Think about it this way.
Let’s say I tell you we are going to go to the track and run sprints. But I won’t tell you how many, or when we’ll stop.
It’ll be much harder to give it your all during the sprint because you don’t know if you’ll run 5 more, or 500 more.
But if I said, we are going to run 10 sprints, you’ll be able to calibrate your energy to give it your all for those 10 sprints.
This is why I’m a big fan of putting these times in your calendar.
