Make this weekend your mid-year review

4 steps to finishing 2023 strong

This week I want to talk about the importance of a mid-year review:

  • How to structure your goals

  • Making goals trackable

  • Adjusting your goals when falling short

  • Finding an accountability partner

The reason this is so important is that as we move through the year, we can often lose momentum, especially during Q2 and Q3 if we don't regularly review and track our progress.

But, once you understand the process of mid-year review, goal adjustment, and the power of accountability, you can maintain focus, momentum, and energy to reach your 2023 goals.

Let’s dive in!

Purpose of a Mid-Year Review

In order to achieve your goals, you first need to make sure you don’t make a few of the most common mistakes:

  • Forgetting to review your goals: It’s easy to have a strong start at the beginning of the year and then fall off as time progresses. Regular reviews keep you on track.

  • Not structuring your goals: Goals need to be organized into manageable sections that cover all aspects of life, not just one.

  • Not making goals trackable: It's crucial to have specific, measurable goals rather than vague ambitions.

  • Lacking accountability: Accountability to another person can make a huge difference in achieving your goals. It’s easier to tell yourself a story about why you didn’t do what you promised yourself than it is to tell that to someone holding you accountable.

These mistakes come when we can get caught up in the daily grind, lose focus, and drift away from our goals.

It’s important to slow down and analyze where you’re at, and take a look in the mirror to see if you are on track to hit your 2023 goals.

Step 1: Structure Your Goals

The first step to achieving your goals is structuring them effectively.

One of the ways we teach goal setting is to put them into 8 different gardens:

  • Tribe

  • Health

  • Spiritual

  • Business

  • Adventure

  • Intellectual

  • Family & relationships

  • Financial & investments

The 8 gardens give you a fulfilled life, instead of just focusing all your attention on 1 thing, like making money.

I have goals in each of those gardens.

To make the most of this approach, focus on what gives you energy—things in your Zone of Genius where you are at your happiest and most energetic. This is where you can produce the best.

It’s important to do things that give us energy and let go of things that don’t give us energy. Let other people do the energy-draining things or don’t do it at all.

Energy is what fuels us and creates opportunities, so we don’t want to drain ours.

Step 2: Make Your Goals Trackable

The next step to achieving your goals is to make them trackable.

Set quantifiable, process-driven goals that allow you to measure your progress regularly.

For example, instead of setting a vague goal like "I want to read more," set a trackable goal like "I want to read 12 books a year" or better yet, "I want to read 15 minutes every day." This helps you build habits that move you closer to your goals, even if you don't hit the precise target.

Apply this framework across all your goals in the 8 Gardens.

Step 3: Adjust Goals When Falling Short

If you find that you're falling short of your goals, it's time to adjust.

The most important thing is to focus on being the person who accomplishes the goals, not just hitting the goal. Focus on building momentum.

Break your goals down into Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and build habits around those KPIs.

For example, if you're a realtor aiming to close 36 deals this year, figure out how many hours of prospecting you need to do each day, how many calls you need to make, and how many appointments it takes for you to get a closing.

Focusing on your daily actions—your KPIs—allows you to build a pipeline for success.

It may be slow at first, but with consistent effort, your prospects can turn into successful closings. Remember, you can't control time, but you can control your actions.

Step 4: Get an Accountability Partner

Find someone who has similar goals and can hold you accountable.

Regular meetings with this person can not only provide moral support but can also push you to maintain your focus and work harder.

This should be someone who can call you out if you're not meeting your commitments, creating a strong motivation to keep up with your goals. A monetary challenge, where you have to pay if you don't meet your goals, can add another level of motivation.

My business coach held me accountable to getting my podcast up and running.

In that moment, my coach wasn’t my friend. He called me out for delaying the start of the podcast.

It’s important to find someone who you can hold each other accountable and call each other out if you aren’t doing what you say you’re going to do.

Take action this weekend!

As we go into the second half of 2023, take some time to review your goals.

Reflect on whether you're doing the actions that a person who achieves those goals would be doing. Adjust your habits if needed, and don't get discouraged if your goals change because that's part of the process.

It’s helpful to go to an inspiring place, or a coffee shop—something outside of your normal daily life. Look at your goals, see where you are at, see what you want to change, etc.

Take the time to actually reflect on these goals. Reflecting gives you clarity about what you want to accomplish.

Ask yourself these 4 critical questions to finish 2023 strong:

  • How much progress have I made on my goals?

  • Am I on track to hit them, or do I need to adjust to make it more realistic?

  • What do I need to add to my life to hit these goals?

  • What do I need to let go of from my life to hit these goals?

And lastly, remember to review your goals frequently—at least weekly.

That way, you can start each new week focused on the KPIs and habits you need to achieve them.
