3 Life-long lessons learned from my White House visit
(so you can apply it to your journey)
Yo Yo!
Thursday was one of the biggest days of my life.
As many of you know, I spoke at the White House about my journey and being a DACA recipient.
In case you aren’t familiar, the DACA program started in 2012 (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).
The program protects people who immigrated to the US as children from deportation and gives us authorization to legally work.
DACA has given 800,000+ Dreamers the ability to work lawfully, get an education, and contribute to their communities. I am a Dreamer.
Since it was the 11th year anniversary, I was invited to speak about my journey.
Since reflecting on the event, and honestly, I’m still processing it, I wanted to share the 3 lessons I learned with you today.
1. People overestimate what they can do in 1 year, but underestimate what they can do in 10
I became a DACA recipient in 2013 and started sharing my story in 2017.
I had no idea that when I started my journey with DACA, or shared my story in 2017, I would be speaking at the White House.
2017 was the first time I shared my story on Instagram and Facebook, and it went viral.
It took 6 years of posting my story every single day. And this leads me to my next lesson…
2. There is power in sharing your story
You inspire others.
You become a voice for other people that sometimes can be afraid to share their stories. For example, people who are undocumented may feel uncomfortable talking about it.
I decided I was going to share my story in the face of discomfort. I’ve shared it because it’s something that needs to be heard. No matter what the consequences are, or what people say about me.
Be aware that your story is powerful and you shouldn’t dim your own light.
You become the light for others. And it inspires others to share their story.
3. Hard work pays off
The thing is, sometimes you don't see the rewards until years later.
There’s a lot of instant gratification now, especially with social media. The thing is, when you work on something valuable, it often takes years to come alive.
I started sharing my story in 2017. It took me 6 years to get to the White House. Most people can’t wait 6 months.
Imagine how much better you’d be at something after 6 years of hard work.
Lastly, my mom came with me on this trip.
The crazy thing is, she finally got her green card last week. She waited 24 years to get it.
It took a combined 30 years of hard work, and it paid off for our family.
Having her there for this moment was amazing.
Enjoy your weekend!
