2/3 of 2023 is over

How will you finish?

Yo, what is up?!

Today is September 2nd. We only have one-third of the year left to make an impact.

What are you doing to move closer to your goals?

As we turn summer into fall, reflect on how your year has gone so far—how far you’ve come, what has gone well, what has brought you energy, and what you want to focus on for the rest of the year.

When we look back at our year, the point isn’t to criticize or self-judge for things we did not accomplish.

One of the best ways to reflect is by understanding The Gap and The Gain (a book by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan).

  • The Gap is the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.

  • The Gain is appreciating where you’ve come, what you’ve learned, and how much progress you’ve made.

We tend to live in The Gap. For example, we might want to hit a revenue milestone for our business, become a millionaire, buy a multi-family unit, etc. We think, “I will be happy when __”, or “I will be successful when __”.

Have high goals but don’t live in The Gap, focus on The Gain.

  • Maybe you haven’t bought that apartment building yet, but you’ve built relationships, analyzed dozens of deals, know the process better, and made some offers.

  • Maybe you aren’t a millionaire yet, but this year, you’ve increased your net worth by $100,000.

  • Maybe your business isn’t making $1M yet, but you’ve increased profits by 25% this year.

When you live in The Gain, it fuels you more than living in The Gap.

By reflecting, we can change course with the direction we are going that we don’t want to be headed in. We can acknowledge there are some things we want to do but haven’t, so we can re-prioritize them. But we are doing this in a positive manner by appreciating The Gain and not beating ourselves up.

What I love about these reflection times is that they allow you to play the Air Game.

David Osborn talks about this a lot. So often, we are living in Ground Game—focused on the day-to-day grind and our never-ending to-do lists.

But the Air Game is when we can zoom out to a 30,000-foot view of our life and understand how far we’ve come, where we want to go and make adjustments as needed.

Since it’s the start of a new month and a new season, take some time this weekend to play the Air Game.

Here are 6 questions to help you reflect:

  • What were my biggest wins?

  • What were my biggest realizations?

  • What areas am I most satisfied with? Least satisfied?

  • What am I going to do more of this month? Less?

  • What am I thinking about for this upcoming month?

  • What about my life and work do I love?
