In Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," there is a famous exchange between Alice and the Cheshire Cat:

Alice: "Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" The Cheshire Cat: "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to." Alice: "I don't much care where." The Cheshire Cat: "Then it doesn't much matter which way you go."

This is how most people live their lives—aimlessly.

Lack of clarity is the biggest mistake real estate investors make with their goals

People don't know where they want to go in life and what they want to achieve because they lack a clear direction.

Without a clear direction, it’s easy to get sidetracked, slow down, or get lost. Investors need to get crystal clear about what you want out of their investments (and in life in general).

When you define what you want, when you are crystal clear on it, it’s infinitely easier to get there.

Real estate investors waste valuable time and resources exploring options when they're unclear about their strategy. They bounce around from asset class to asset class and market to market, without mastering one. They lack a deal investing criteria so don’t know a good deal from a bad deal, nor its long-term impact on their portfolio.

Lack of clarity leads to indecision (and bad decisions).

Questions to ask yourself to gain clarity

With your investments, get clear on

• Why you want to or are investing in real estate

• How you will make your money

• Which asset class (and why)

• Where you’ll invest, down to the neighborhood (and why)

• What your financial freedom number is (if you aren’t FI yet)

• What your goals are with scaling (if you are FI already)

• How much money do you want make

With your real estate business, get clear on

• What you want to achieve with this business

• Are you building it to sell?

• Are you building it to be a liquidity machine?

• Are you building it to be a cash cow?

• Are you building it to raise investment?

• Are you building it to raise our reputation?

Lastly, get clear on how this will impact your lifestyle

• What value will you contribute to the world

• Describe the lifestyle you want as a result of your wealth

• How you will enjoy time with friends and family, travel, and be healthy while running a business/ investing

• What your ideal family life is like

• Where you will travel to

• What kind of adventure will you seek

• How you will give back to your community

This weekend’s action step

If you aren’t clear on all of these questions, I’d recommend spending some time this weekend to get clear on them.

On our Goal-Setting Mastermind call with Matt King, he recommended to go to a place that inspires you to journal. It could be a coffee shop, somewhere in nature, a library, or wherever. Something out of your normal routine.

Spend some time to write down the answers to these questions and understand the true WHY behind what you want to achieve.

Once you know where you want to go in life, you’ll be clear on the right action steps to take to get there and can get there faster without the ambiguity.
